Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
